Understanding the Lemon Law

In the state of New Jersey, the Lemon Law applies to used cars that protect the people purchasing a used car from any sort of violation by the dealership. Lemon Law focuses on two main points:

1. The dealer must provide a warranty to the customer for that used car, with the warranty period decided based on the current mileage
2. If the used car requires repairs for any defects during the warranty period, the dealer is liable to pay for them

Which Used Cars are Eligible under the Lemon Law?

If you have purchased a used passenger car from a licensed dealership that is not older than seven years, then you will be covered under this law. In addition, the mileage should not exceed 100,000 miles and the purchasing price must be at least $3000 at the time of buying.

However, cars with the following conditions are not eligible:

• A used car purchased from a private seller
• Leased vehicles
• Salvage vehicles
• A used car with a manufacturer’s warranty

The parts that are specifically covered under the Lemon Law include:

• Transmission Manual: This includes all the seals and gaskets, transmission mounts, throw-out bearings, pressure plate, slave cylinders, clutch master, and internal lubricated parts. 
• Transmission Automatic: This includes gaskets, seals, transmission mounts, vacuum modulator, torque converter, and internal lubricated parts.
• Rear-Wheel Drive: This includes constant velocity joints, axle shafts, seals, gaskets, internal lubricated parts, and front hub bearings.
• Front-Wheel Drive:  This includes all axle shafts and bearings, propeller shafts, gaskets, seals, supports and U-joints, and all internal lubricated parts. 
• Engine: This includes all the timing chains, internal lubricated parts, flywheel, manifolds, water pump, valve covers, engine mounts, harmonic balancer, oil pan, timing belt, turbo-charger housing, and gars and cover.
